Music and Choir

All Saints’ has a long tradition of musical excellence and, whilst not at the heart of our worship, certainly gives a wing to our prayers and spiritual life.

The choir meets once a week to practice the hymns set for Sunday and to prepare anthems that are sung during the liturgy, usually about twice a month, depending on the season.

Over the years the choir has given choral concerts in Milan as well as in other major centres, such as Genoa, Florence and Geneva and occasionally joins forces with other choirs to mark special events.

Some of our members seem to have been singing in the choir for most of their lives. Others, because of their short-term stay in Milan, can only be with us for a few months. And it is not at all unusual for old friends of All Saints’ to be seen singing again in the choir when they return for a short visit. Anyone who enjoys singing and can read music will receive a very warm welcome at the regular Friday night practice at 8pm, even if they are only going to be in Milan for a few months.

Our repertoire is wide ranging from Byrd to the Beatles, Haydn to Harris, and Rossini to Rutter, but what we sing very much depends on the strength of the choir at the time. About fifteen members take part during the Sunday Eucharist and there is always a need for more singers, especially for the bigger events that take place during the year, such as Remembrance Sunday and the Carol Service at Christmas.

Our organist is Sig. Mauro Longari who joined All Saints’ in July 2005. He received his musical education at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire in Milan and at the Conservatoire of Music in Geneva. Mauro has numerous music students and continues to give recitals in and around Milan.
